Information and Organizational Support

Citizens for Midwifery provides a state-by-state evaluation of political action and pending initiatives. And many thanks for the resources provided by CfM's NUTS AND BOLTS Political Action Guide.

The American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) provides a wealth of political action information on their web site. Also visit their Primer to Political Action.

[NOTE: You can also listen to recorded information about pending federal and state legislative initiatives by calling the ACNM Legislative Hotline at (202) 728-9860 after (9 am - 5 pm, M-F, Eastern Time) and pressing "5". A recorded message will give you the latest information about issues pending in Congress and state legislatures.]

For information about federal legislation, and working with your elected officials, go to the Library of Congress Legislative Information System

Also try the United States Senate, whose web site includes legislation and contact information, and, of course, the United States House of Representatives, who provides similar information.

Information about the Executive Branch, including administration policy and contact information, can also be informative.

Each state maintains varying levels of information on the internet, for public accessibility. As part of an international code of standards, each state has a URL (uniform resource locator), which is standardized. To find your state, type this URL, replacing the asterisk with the two-letter postal code abbreviation for your state: www.state.*.us (example: the State of Minnesota's URL is www.state.mn.us). Most states also maintain records online for their Departments of Health, Departments of Human Service, and other relevant regulatory agencies. These can be a source of good information about allies, about relevant departmental areas, and about the general climate of the agency.

Many thanks to Citizens for Midwifery for material adapted from their web site. Click here to go there for a lot of other great information and contact to others in your community who are interested in birth issues.
